A breathtaking view from space has captured India and Sri Lanka glowing against the darkness of night, while dramatic thunderstorms lit up the skies over the Gulf of Mannar and the Bay of Bengal in a stunning display of nature’s power.
The mesmerising timelapse was recorded from the International Space Station (ISS) as it orbited Earth, offering a rare perspective of the Indian subcontinent after sunset.
The footage was created using images provided by the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

The video begins as the ISS flies over the Arabian Sea before crossing southern India and Sri Lanka, eventually moving toward the Bay of Bengal. As the station glides silently above Earth, clusters of lightning repeatedly illuminate towering storm clouds over the Gulf of Mannar, the narrow stretch of water separating southeastern India from northwestern Sri Lanka, and across parts of the Bay of Bengal.
The brilliant flashes highlight active convective systems associated with the region’s tropical weather, revealing the immense scale of thunderstorms that are often difficult to appreciate from the ground.
Against the backdrop of city lights tracing India’s coastline and urban centers, the bursts of lightning create a spectacular contrast between human civilisation and the atmosphere’s raw energy.
The International Space Station, orbiting approximately 400 kilometres above Earth at a speed of nearly 28,000 kmph, circles the planet about every 90 minutes.
This unique vantage point allows astronauts and onboard cameras to document weather systems, atmospheric phenomena, and changing landscapes in remarkable detail.
Such imagery is more than visually captivating. Observations from the ISS help scientists study cloud formation, lightning activity, tropical storms, and Earth’s climate systems.
Time-lapse sequences also provide valuable insights into how thunderstorms evolve over large regions, complementing data collected by weather satellites and ground-based instruments.
