Oman Condemns Colombia Over Recognition of Israeli Sovereignty in Occupied Golan Heights

Officially, the Sultanate of Oman has criticised the Colombian government’s new policy regarding the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as a flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and pertinent resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

According to the official diplomatic statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat, the new policy of Colombia goes against the international legitimacy of UN Security Council Resolution 497 adopted in 1981, where the legality of the Israeli imposition of laws, administration, and jurisdiction over the seized Syrian territories was deemed null, void, and illegitimate.

Oman reaffirmed its steadfast diplomatic stance that the strategic Golan Heights remain an inseparable portion of occupied Syrian Arab land. Omani officials expressed complete solidarity with Syria’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence, while calling on all global governments to strictly respect international law and refrain from taking or endorsing unilateral actions that attempt to alter the established legal status of occupied territories.

The official Omani diplomatic statement follows Bogota’s policy declaration on August 10, making Colombia only the second nation after the United States to formally acknowledge Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The controversial announcement triggered immediate diplomatic backlash across the Middle East, drawing widespread condemnations from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt.

International political analysts note that Bogota’s recognition threatens to disrupt established peace frameworks across the broader region. By departing from long-standing international consensus regarding the occupied Syrian Golan, Colombia’s decision reinforces attempts to impose a legal fait accompli while creating additional diplomatic friction for future Middle East conflict resolution efforts and stability.

Reaffirming its core foreign policy principles, Oman urged international governments to adhere strictly to United Nations mandates and respect state sovereignty. Muscat emphasised that achieving enduring regional peace and security depends entirely on upholding multilateral international law rather than executing unilateral diplomatic actions that erode global consensus and destabilise Middle Eastern security dynamics.
