From just buying the essential things like notebooks, stationery, and backpacks, UAE back-to-school shopping has changed drastically to include beauty products that will be needed by the students during their schooling year 2026-2027. It is being noted that the involvement of older kids and younger adults has become more important in determining the contents of the shopping list.

This change is an indication of how students have changed the way they think about the back-to-school shopping season. Instead of limiting the shopping process to purchasing only practical items, teenagers are also expressing themselves in the process.

For 16-year-old Dubai student Mimi, cosmetics have become part of her preparations. She recently replaced her eyeliner and said she was looking forward to wearing it when school resumes. She also observed that makeup use varies among students, ranging from occasional use and natural-looking styles to more elaborate routines among some younger pupils.

Retailers are seeing particularly strong interest in practical beauty products, including skincare items, lip products, concealers, mascaras and lightweight complexion products. A Landmark Group spokesperson said shoppers are increasingly looking for products that create a natural appearance without requiring lengthy routines.

Trend-led merchandise is also influencing purchasing decisions. Character and entertainment brands, including Spider-Man, Minecraft, Stitch and Minnie Mouse, remain popular, while social media increasingly affects preferences for colours, designs and product styles.

Sustainability is another emerging consideration. Ashwini Karhadkar of Centerpoint said some school bags are now made using recycled plastic bottles, reflecting stronger environmental awareness among younger consumers. Retailers are also reporting growing interest in recycled materials, reduced packaging and more sustainable sourcing.

At the same time, traditional essentials remain central to UAE back-to-school shopping. Bags, lunch accessories and stationery continue to dominate basic requirements, while parents are paying greater attention to comfort features such as padded straps, reinforced construction and lightweight materials.

Retailers also report rising demand for coordinated sets and ready-to-use collections, as families seek convenient options that simplify shopping while offering value.
