Dubai Police Sound Alarm Over Deceptive Online Advertisements Targeting UAE Residents

A new alert against an increasing number of misleading digital advertisements on social media platforms and unverified websites has been recently issued by the Anti-Fraud Centre in the Dubai Police General Department of Criminal Investigation, who warned residents of the dangers of being scammed into making false economic commitments through such misleading ads.

As per the guidelines on safety provided for in the process of raising cyber security awareness nationally, cybercriminals have been increasingly using sponsored social media posts, unverified websites, and fake promotional banners to trick unsuspecting internet users in the United Arab Emirates.

The officials said that such misleading digital advertising usually tricks people into the promise of lucrative part-time employment, discounted deliveries, or even misleading high-yielding investments.

The police warned that interacting with these fraudulent advertisements poses severe operational and financial risks to members of the public. Beyond immediate financial losses stemming from compromised credit cards and bank accounts, individuals lured into fake employment traps risk having their personal identities hijacked by criminal syndicates. Scammers routinely utilize victims’ stolen personal details to establish illicit bank accounts, route untraceable international wire transfers, or mask wider money laundering networks without the primary account holder’s explicit awareness or consent.

Under local law enforcement guidelines, ignorance of digital fraud mechanisms does not exempt residents from potential legal liability if their personal bank accounts or identity credentials are ultimately utilised in illicit operational chains. In response, law enforcement officials urge all community members to exercise strict digital hygiene by thoroughly scrutinising corporate job listings, verifying official employer credentials, avoiding suspicious third-party links, and firmly refusing any requests to handle financial transfers or process payments for unknown entities.

Dubai Police reaffirmed that proactive public vigilance remains the primary frontline defence against regional cybercrime and digital exploitation. Residents who encounter fraudulent online advertisements, unverified promotional links, or suspicious digital entities are strongly instructed to report such incidents immediately through the official police eCrime portal or by directly contacting the dedicated support hotline at 901.
