A massive search operation is currently underway in Pakistan. This is because there was an avalanche in which some of the mountaineers were trapped on Broad Peak.
Some of the missing mountaineers are Nirmal Purja, who is famously known as Nimsdai. Out of them, four mountaineers died in this incident while the rest were rescued under tough conditions where even the mountain made it tougher for them
An avalanche has occurred in Broad Peak, which is an 8,047-meter-tall mountain range of Pakistan. It is the second tallest mountain in the world. This tragedy occurred on Thursday while a group of 10 climbers was attempting to scale this huge mountain.
The rescue operations are being assisted by helicopters provided by the Pakistan Army. They are facing difficulties due to tough weather, difficult terrain, and the possibility of more avalanches. All these factors are hampering the process of rescue operations. Officials say hopes remain, but conditions continue to complicate the operation.
Purja, a Nepal-born British mountaineer, gained international recognition through the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, which chronicled his record-breaking achievement of climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in just over six months. A former Gurkha soldier and member of the British Special Boat Service, he is regarded as one of the most accomplished high-altitude climbers of his generation.
Authorities confirmed that four bodies have been recovered from the mountain, including climbers from Oman, Nepal and the United States. The expedition also included mountaineers from Pakistan and China, highlighting the international nature of the team. Officials have not yet released the identities of all those still missing as rescue teams continue ground and aerial searches.
Rescuers reported that aerial reconnaissance has located seven climbers on the mountain, but their identities and medical condition remain unconfirmed until teams can reach the site. A GPS device linked to Purja reportedly showed movement after the avalanche, offering a small source of hope, although authorities cautioned that it is too early to conclude.
Broad Peak is considered one of the world’s most technically demanding mountains, with avalanches, rapidly changing weather and extreme altitude posing constant risks even for experienced climbers.
