Oman, northwestern governorate of Al Buraimi, the police force has captured a migrant worker for running an illicit cross-border money transfer network targeted at foreign labourers, senior law enforcement officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The targeted law enforcement action underscores a broader, continuous crackdown by Omani security agencies aimed at dismantling underground financial networks, curbing shadow banking practices, and enforcing strict regulatory compliance within the nation’s overall financial and remittance ecosystem.
According to an official communique released by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) via the Al Buraimi Governorate Police Command, the suspect deployed unauthorised smartphone applications to facilitate international monetary remittances for migrant workers in exchange for personal financial gains.

ROP officials confirmed that preliminary police investigation procedures have concluded, and the detainee has been formally transferred to public prosecution to face legal charges under local financial legislation.
Financial regulators across the Sultanate have increasingly targeted informal value transfer systems that function completely outside established central banking oversight. Under Omani financial regulations, conducting financial intermediation, currency exchange, or cross-border payment processing without explicit authorization from the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) is a serious statutory offence. Authorities stress that unregulated monetary routes severely compromise national economic stability by deliberately bypassing mandatory anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) protocol frameworks.
Beyond disrupting state monetary controls, shadow financial operations expose vulnerable expatriate workers to severe personal risks, including wire fraud, unrecoverable capital losses, and predatory transaction fees. The Sultanate routinely cautions citizens and foreign residents against utilizing unverified digital channels, emphasizing that legitimate financial transfers should occur exclusively through accredited commercial banks, licensed exchange houses, or CBO-approved financial technology platforms.
The Royal Oman Police reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to actively tracking down unauthorized digital financial portals and maintaining rigorous regulatory oversight across all regional governorates to safeguard the nation’s economic system and public trust.
