The road was launched on July 29 by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT). This section of the road became available for use in light of the completion of a nine-kilometre road development project. The improved road is intended to promote road safety and minimize travel time. It will boost the local economy through improved connectivity between residential areas and tourist sites.
This route begins at the AI Jabal AI Akhbar road opposite the Dusit Hotel and extends to the AI Makahb area, passing through Shanut. The minister stated: “The road has been fitted with a variety of safety precautions such as steel guardrails, concrete barriers, and directional and warning signs to improve driving conditions amid the rugged landscape.”
Authorities expect the project to make travel more efficient for both residents and visitors while encouraging greater tourism activity in Al Jabal Al Akhdar, a destination known for its cooler climate, dramatic landscapes, terraced farms, and luxury resorts. Easier access is also expected to benefit local businesses by increasing visitor numbers throughout the year.
The road forms part of the ministry’s wider strategy to modernize Oman’s transport network and improve connectivity between key economic and tourism hubs. Infrastructure investments such as the Al Jabal Al Akhdar project align with the country’s broader development plans aimed at supporting sustainable tourism, enhancing road safety and facilitating regional growth.
Al Jabal Al Akhdar has become one of Oman’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, attracting domestic and international visitors seeking outdoor recreation, mountain scenery, and cultural experiences. Officials believe continued investment in transport infrastructure will strengthen the region’s appeal while improving accessibility for surrounding communities and supporting long-term economic diversification.
