UAE Culinary Sector Launches Onam Sadhya Feasts for Harvest Festival Celebrations

The food service providers, luxury hotels, and retail hypermarkets operating in the UAE have formally launched their menu offerings for Onam sadhya as part of celebrating the yearly harvest festival of Kerala.

The restaurant owners in major commercial cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah have reported a huge consumer demand for the sumptuous vegetarian meal that traditionally consists of up to 33 varieties of food prepared on fresh banana leaves. While the celebration’s most important day of Thiruvonam is celebrated on August 26, the hospitality industry in the Gulf state has extended their marketing periods, providing seasonal menus for several weeks to cater to their huge population of Malayalis in the region.

The festive dining packages span a wide price spectrum designed to target varied consumer segments. Neighbourhood eateries in Karama, Bur Dubai, and Madinat Zayed are serving multi-course meals priced accessibly between Dh37 and Dh55 per guest, whereas luxury hotel venues in Downtown Dubai and Business Bay offer elevated fine-dining variations reaching up to Dh195. To capture the growing home-dining market, prominent retail hypermarkets have rolled out packaged “sadhya-in-a-box” takeaway options, complete with pre-portioned curries, rice, condiments, and banana leaves.

Since Onam is not an official public holiday in the UAE, food service operators have adapted traditional dining schedules to fit the daily routines of working professionals. While sadhya is historically a midday meal enjoyed after morning household rituals, several regional establishments are accommodating diners by extending service hours to include evening dinner seatings and weekend availability, enabling residents to celebrate without workplace conflict.

The influx of dining activity highlights the commercial significance of South Asian cultural festivities within the UAE’s broader retail and hospitality sectors. General managers and culinary directors report that early reservations for peak celebration dates filled within days of release, prompting numerous venues to implement mandatory advance bookings or operate strictly on a first-come, first-served basis to regulate crowd flow.

Beyond traditional dining formats, several high-end venues across the emirates are introducing contemporary twists to the festive spread, incorporating premium ingredients alongside classic staples like avial, olan, and payasam. Meanwhile, community organizations and corporate entities are hosting large-scale group feasts, cementing the sadhya’s role as a key social gathering. Hospitality industry analysts note that the extended festival period provides a significant commercial boost to local supply chains, with demand for fresh produce, coconut, and banana leaves surging across wholesale markets statewide.
