Dubai police authorities have intensified their efforts to inspect and raise awareness about safe usage of jet skis as a number of preventable marine accidents have been reported to have been caused by careless riding in the hectic summer months.
“Speeding, riding in swimming areas, and not using life jackets or having proper riding experience were cited as reasons behind a majority of the jet ski accidents,” according to Dubai police officials. The police added that most of the accidents could be prevented if people abided by simple rules.
Brigadier Ahmed Abdullah Salem Al Adidi, Acting Director of the Ports Police Station, said reckless manoeuvres, riding too close to beaches and marinas, ignoring safe distances from other vessels and performing dangerous stunts put not only operators at risk but also swimmers, boat users and other beachgoers. He stressed that certified life jackets should be worn throughout every journey and recommended protective helmets to reduce the risk of serious injuries in the event of a collision or fall.
Police also advised riders to inspect their watercraft before departure by checking fuel levels, engine performance, steering systems and ensuring the emergency engine cut-off lanyard is securely attached. Operators have been urged to avoid venturing into the sea during strong winds or rough weather, remain within approved navigation zones, respect passenger capacity limits and carry a waterproof communication device for emergencies. Parents and rental companies were reminded that children below the legal operating age must not ride jet skis unless accompanied by a parent or a qualified adult.
The latest campaign is being conducted in coordination with the Dubai Maritime Authority and targets both riders and rental companies through inspections and awareness initiatives. Authorities said the objective is to improve compliance with marine safety regulations while reducing accidents during one of the busiest periods for water sports. Similar enforcement campaigns in recent years have resulted in hundreds of violations, including offences involving expired licences, riding in prohibited areas and failure to wear mandatory safety equipment.
Dubai Police urged all jet ski users to cooperate with marine patrols, follow navigation rules and stop riding after sunset in accordance with operating regulations. Officials said responsible behaviour on the water remains essential to ensuring a safe experience for residents and visitors throughout the summer.
