Omani maritime and envirnormental authorities announceda emergency  containment efforts to to deal with growing slick off the sultanates southern costaline,  confirmed by the authorities . its a environmental threat to stem by oil tanker ran aground inside a newly created marine sanctuary near Al-Qibliyyah Island—part of the ecologically sensitive Hallaniyat archipelago in the Dhofar Governorate.

As per the satellite technical analysis and environmental monitoring, the oil slick has spread across approximately 390 square kilometres of the sea surface. The ship that got stranded is Caroline Bezengi, which was stranded after a few explosions while cruising near the coast of Yemen.

Various marine conservation organisations like Greenpeace and PAX have raised fears of an environmental disaster in view of the fact that this ship carries one million barrels of heavy oil cargo.

To mitigate immediate ecological damage, Oman’s Environment Authority alongside the Ministry of Transport has initiated continuous aerial surveillance and deployed technical diving teams to evaluate the hull’s structural integrity. Emergency teams are currently formulating a complex ship-to-ship transfer plan to safely offload the petroleum cargo, aiming to protect fragile coral reef ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and critical sea turtle nesting sites across the protected archipelago.

International salvage operations have officially commenced, with British maritime security firm Ambrey partnering with specialized global oil spill response contractors to stabilize the complex nautical situation. Maritime security analysts report that the grounded vessel is suspected of operating within Russia’s shadow tanker fleet, a global network of aging, loosely regulated vessels used to circumvent Western economic sanctions and trade restrictions.

The grounding inside a marine sanctuary established just last year underscores heightened regional maritime vulnerabilities amid escalating Gulf shipping tensions. Omani officials reaffirmed that rapid containment remains their central priority to mitigate environmental degradation, protect coastal fisheries, and safeguard the Sultanate’s valuable marine biodiversity from long-term damage.
