Qatar Launches Digital Permit System for Passengers Flying with Prescription Medicines

The Ministry of Public Health introduced on Monday that international passengers who are taking regulated prescription drugs into or out of Qatar have to obtain an electronic permit through the newly launched digital approval platform by the Ministry of Public Health. The online portal modernises travel protocols across the country’s border entry points, streamlining administrative procedures for arriving and departing travellers while maintaining rigorous oversight of regulated pharmaceutical substances.

A centralised portal was launched by the Ministry of Public Health to digitalise the entire process of clearance request applications, thus making the old manual system obsolete. With the help of this consolidated portal, the travellers will be able to lodge their medical documents, keep an eye on the application status, and get their electronic approval before they travel.

Health authorities strongly advise travellers to submit permit requests at least five working days before their scheduled travel dates to ensure sufficient administrative processing time. Once all required documentation is submitted, specialised evaluation teams within the Department of Pharmacy and Drug Control review application files and issue formal determinations within a standard three-working-day timeframe.

To access the platform, applicants must complete secure user verification using Qatar’s National Authentication System (NAS) account credentials. Mandatory submission requirements include uploading valid medical prescriptions issued by certified healthcare practitioners, official medical diagnostic summaries, and valid government identification details before electronic clearance certificates are granted in full compliance with national pharmaceutical regulations.

To support global passenger compliance, health officials released a detailed practical guide outlining step-by-step submission procedures, required documentation frameworks, and an updated official register listing all controlled medical substances subject to import restrictions.

The digital health initiative reflects Qatar’s ongoing public sector modernisation drive, aligning national border control protocols with advanced digital governance standards. Health officials emphasized that automating prescription medicine clearances effectively safeguards public health standards while offering a frictionless, highly transparent travel experience for millions of residents, business travelers, and international tourists passing through Hamad International Airport each year.
